Description

CELTIC, Central Europe - Switzerland. Helvetii. Late 2nd-early 1st century BC. Scyphate stater (Electrum, 22.5 mm, 6.72 g, 8 h), "au triskèle" type. Celticized head of Apollo with curly hair to left. Rev. Celticized charioteer driving biga to right; below, triskeles running clockwise. Cf. Allen, SNR 53, 62-63, Castelin 854-5, De la Tour 8897, Delestrée & Tache 3073 and HMZ 1.5 (all with the triskeles anticlockwise). Same reverse die as Nomos 20, 2020, 12. An extremely rare variety. Toned. Usual striking flatness and minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
