Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.22 g, 6 h), Siscia, 1st officina, 319-320. CONSTANT - INVS AVG Bust of Constantine to left, wearing a close-fitting helmet adorned with a crest and two x-shaped ornaments accompanied by pellets, holding a spear in his right hand over his right shoulder and with a shield over his left. Rev. VICT.LAETAE PRINC PERP /ΔSIS* Two Victories standing facing each other, holding, between them, a shield inscribed VOT/PR resting on an altar inscribed S. RIC 95. Rare with this helmet ornament. Sharp, attractive and with a brown patina. Extremely fine.
Coins minted in Siscia with this interesting bust are by no means scarce, however, they almost invariably show a helmet adorned by two six-pointed stars. This piece, however, bears ornaments that are much more rarely found: two x-shaped ornaments accompanied by pellets. A minor variant, but of real interest to specialists!
