Description

Ptolemaic Kings of Egypt
Ptolemy IV Philopator, 225-205 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 14.03 g, 12 h), Tyre, circa 221-205. Diademed and draped bust of Ptolemy IV to right, wearing Macedonian military chlamys. Rev. ΠTOΛEMAIOY ΦIΛOΠATOPOΣ Eagle with closed wings standing to left on thunderbolt; to left, club surmounted by the monogram of Tyros; between eagle's legs, monogram of Δ•Σ; in field to right, monogram of ΣΩ. BMC 64. CPE 923 (same dies). Svoronos 1178 (then only a single example known). Rare, nicely centered and with a calm and serene portrait. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
