SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Alexander I Balas, 152-145 BC. (15.5 mm, 3.60 g, 12 h), semi-autonomous issue, Apameia on-the-Axios, year ΣΞΓ = 263 = 150-149 BC. Turreted, veiled and draped bust of Tyche to right. Rev. ΑΠΑΜΕΩΝ / ΓΞΣ Alexander the Great, wearing elephant's skin headdress, military dress and boots, raising his right hand and holding spear and shield with his left, advancing to left, his head turned back to right. BMC 1. DCA 134. HGC 9, 1426. A fascinating coin with a most interesting reverse. Some rough areas, otherwise, good very fine.
What we see on the reverse is Alexander, at the head of his army, leading the way; pointing onwards and looking at the troops who follow him.
