Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 344-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.78 g, 2 h), struck under the magistrates D.. and E... Helmeted ephebe, nude, holding a small round shield with his left hand and the reins with his right, riding to left; below horse, Δ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his outstretched right hand and resting his left hand on the dolphin's back; below, reversed E and tiny dolphin swimming to left over waves. Fischer-Bossert 648 (V251/R500). HN III 870. Vlasto 388 (same dies). Clear and of good style. Very fine.
