Carlos and Juana, 1516-1555.
Double Principat 1532, Barcelona. Crowned busts of Carlos and Juana facing each other / Crowned shield between two letters B. 6,99g. Calicó 9 (this coin); Cayón 3155; Fr. 35.
Extremely rare. Nice very fine.
The Double Principat pieces of Barcelona are all very rare. The records of the mint only indicate the volume of gold which was intended to be struck, but not the kind of coin issued. It seems that the Principats and the Double Principats were issued mostly for international purchases of manufactured goods. Their great quality and fineness made them famous abroad, and most of them were melted down in foreign countries. In fact, in Barcelona, Castilian and French gold coins were much more used for daily circulation than local coinage.
