LIMP L AVREL VERVS AVG Bare-headed and cuirassed bust r. Rev. PROFECTIO AVG TR P II COS III Verus on horseback r., holding spear. C 135. RIC M. Aurelius 477. Calicó 2141.
Rare. About Extremely Fine.
Lucius Aelius Aurelius Commodus may well have been Hadrian’s grandson, and in 138, as part of Hadrian’s appointment of Antoninus Pius as the heir to the throne, the 7 years old Lucius was, along with Marcus Aurelius, adopted by Pius as his son and destined for the throne. Soon after his accession a new war with Parthia broke out and Verus was sent with an army to repel them (the reverse of this coin shows Verus setting out, profectio, on the march). He seems to have been entirely successful, earning a great victory over the Parthians and settling affairs in Armenia as well.
