Beneventum, LOMBARDS. Gottschalk, 739-742. Solidus 739-742, AV 20.5mm., 3.59g. In the name of Byzantine emperor Leo III (717-741). D V L-PPVGVS(retrograde) Crowned bust facing, holding globus cruciger. Rev. VICTORv-vVGIVS( retrograde). Cross potent set on four steps; to l., G and in exergue, CONOB. CNI XVIII 24 var (Gregory). MEC -. MIR - cf 159.

Rare. Edge clipped and minor marks on fields, otherwise Very Fine.

This rare issue in the name of Leo III should be attributed to the time when the Duke Gottschalk revolting against King Liutprand whould have asked the protection of the Byzantine Emperor Leo III.
