Description

Sabatier, J. Description générale des monnaies byzantines frappées sous les empereurs d’Orient depuis Arcadius jusqu’à la prise de Constantinople par Mahomet II. Paris and London; Rollin & Feuardent, 1862. Two volumes. 8vo., pp. (4), vii, (1), 325, (1); (4), 377, (3), errata to each volume; 70 engraved plates. Handsomely bound in contemporary red quarter morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, raised bands, the spine lettered and ruled in gilt. The joints and extremities rubbed, particularly to the head of the spine, the binding shaken with some pages loose. The elusive, original edition of this classic work. Conceived of as a continuation to Cohen but out of print and already difficult to obtain by the 1880’s. From the library of Count Papadopoli-Aldobrandini with his finely engraved armorial ex-libris on the front pastedown. A very good copy of this classic reference, complete, scarce and with a distinguished provenance. Rare thus. (2)
Clain-Stefanelli 5411*. Kroh p. 93.
