Grant, M. From Imperium to Auctoritas. A Historical Study of the Aes Coinage in the Roman Empire. 49 B.C. - A.D. 14. Cambridge, 1946. 4to., pp. xviii, 510; 12 fine plates. Original cloth, gilt, jacket. [With:] The Six Main Aes Coinages of Augustus. Edinburgh, 1953. 8vo., pp. xx, 178; 20 fine plates. The first work a little bumped but clean throughout, the second title worn and dusty but internally clean and with a neat, dated ownership inscription by Jacob Hirsch on the first free endpaper. An almost very fine copy of the preferred original edition of Michael Grant’s important reference with far superior plates to those in the reprint. Both titles scarce, the first especially so with the original jacket. (2)
The main title; Clain-Stefanelli 4109*. Grierson p. 77. Kroh pp. 73 & 76, “covers a lot of ground that is all but ignored by other references. Its analysis of the early Roman colonial coinage is particularly useful and it is a very detailed study with over 500 pages and 12 excellent plates. Originals are impossible to find." The second work; Clain-Stefanelli 4110. Kroh p. 77, “is a continuation of [Grant’s] research in FITA.”
