Description

Riccio, G. G. Catalogo di antiche medaglie consolari e di famiglie romane. Napoli; Stamperia del Fibreno, 1855. 4to., pp. mounted frontispiece portrait of the author within decorative oval border; the title printed in gold and bronze ink within a matching decorative oval border, vii, (1), 230, (2); 6 embossed folding plates illustrating both sides of 140 Roman coins printed in metallic foil (gold, silver and bronze), 1 lithographic plate of monograms. Bound in green quarter calf and marbled boards, the spine elaborately decorated in gilt. Rubbed and worn, the spine a little scuffed, with a neat contemporary library label pasted on. The contents lightly foxed with some wear, particularly to the plates, some discolouration, the page edges thumbed, a few neat annotations in the text. From the library of Camillo Serafini with his library stamp and ink signature on the first free endpaper. A fascinating work, the earliest Italian numismatic publication depicting coins printed in high relief and with metallic tints. Unsurprisingly rare.
Babelon p. 162. Bassoli p. 47, “Gennaro Riccio, deserves recognition, even if he was reproached for including apocryphal coins, taken from earlier works, in his general collection of Republican coins.” Leitzmann p. 116.
