Description

The Roman Empire
Hadrian, 117 – 138
Denarius 119-122, AR 3.50 g. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG Laureate bust r. Rev. P M TR P – COS III Hadrian standing l., holding rudder on globe and spear. C 1162. BMC 240. RIC 110 var. (also cuirassed).A magnificent portrait and a finely engraved reverse.
Old cabinet tone and good extremely fine From his 3rd consulate (COS III) onwards it is, in my view, impossible to sequence Hadrian’s portraits. Some are more artistic than others but they are, in my opinion, of the same type with a full beard and a large head portrait without bust. Some portraits are left facing, but most to the right. Some are without, many with a laurel wreath. AMP.
