Description

Croton

Nomos circa 350-340, AR 22 mm, 7.83 g. Head of Hera Lacinia facing, wearing decorated stephane. Rev. ΚΡΟ ? ΤΩΝΙ ? ΑΤΑΝ Young Heracles seated l. on lion’s skin, holding jug in outstretched r. hand and club resting on ground in l.; in lower r. field, bow. SNG Lloyd 616 (these dies). SNG ANS 371 (this obverse die). Dewing 511 (these dies). Historia Numorum Italy 2167.
Rare. Of beautiful late Classical style, unusually well-centred and complete with a light
old cabinet tone. An almost invisible die break on obverse and a flan crack
at six o’clock, otherwise good very fine
