Description

Tetradrachm, uncertain mint 82, probably in Cilicia circa 155-150, AR 31 mm, 16.75 g. Diademed head of Demetrius I r., with fairly lean features, forelock above forehead, two hornlike locks ate temple. Laurel wreath border. Rev. BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ – ΔHMHTPIOY Tyche, holding sceptre and cornucopiae, seated l. on throne supported by tritoness r.; in outer l. field, monogram on humped bull leaping l. CSE 552. Lorber, Commerce (Demetrios I hoard), 2003, in CH X, pl. 44, 441 (this coin) = SC 1621.3 (this coin illustrated).
Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Wonderful old cabinet tone

Tetradrachm of Soloi and Mallus are joined by a new variety from a probably Cilician mint, which for the first time allows a definitive identification of the animal forepart that appears on many of this mint’s issues.
