AN INTERESTING COLLECTION OF ROMAN REPUBLICAN COINS FORMED BY AN ENGLISH AMATEUR SCHOLAR
C. Caecilius Metellus Caprarius. Semis 125, Æ 11.34g. Laureate head of Saturn r.; behind, S and before, ROMA upwards. Rev. Prow r., inscribed C·METELLVS; above, elephant’s head r. and before, S. Babelon Caecilia 17 (misdescribed). Sydenham 486. RBW 1086 var. Crawford 269/2 var.
An apparently unrecorded variety of an extremely rare type. Minor
areas of corrosion, otherwise good very fine
This variety, with the reverse legend written out in full, without ligate letters, is not in Crawford.
