Syracuse.
Tetradrachm, unsigned dies in the style of Eukleidas circa 400/395-390, AR 17.27 g. Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving fast quadriga l.; above, Nike flying r., crowning charioteer with wreath. In exergue, dolphin r. Rev. [ΣΥ] – ΡΑ – Κ – ΟΣΙ – ΩΝ Head of nymph Arethusa l., hair in bands, wearing double-loop earring and necklace with frontal pendant; around, four dolphins. SNG ANS 296 (these dies). Boston, MFA 445 (these dies). SNG Lloyd 1404 (these dies). Gillet 664 (this coin). Tudeer 91. Coins, Artists and Tyrants 91 (misdescribed as 90i, this coin).
Rare. A lovely portrait struck on an exceptionally fresh metal and with a superb old
cabinet tone. Obverse slightly off-centre and obverse, as usual for this issue, from
a worn die, otherwise good extremely fine
