Syracuse.
Tetradrachm circa 485-480, AR 17.29 g. Slow quadriga driven r. by charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown horses. Rev. ΣVRA – KOΣI – ON Pearl-diademed head of nymph Arethusa r., wearing necklace. Around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. SNG Fitzwilliam 1174 (these dies). SNG Lockett 875 (this coin). Randazzo 242 (these dies). Boehringer 59.
A very interesting and unusual portrait struck on a very large flan.
Wonderful old cabinet tone and extremely fine

Ex Ratto (Lugano) 4 April 1927, 393 and Glendining’s 28 October 1955, Lockett part I, 774 sales. From an Exceptional Collection assembled between the early 70s and late 90s.
