Galba, 68 – 69. Denarius, African mint, Carthage (?) circa June 68 – October 69, AR 3.61 g. IMP AVG – SER GALBA Laureate bust r. with globe at point of bust. Rev. VICT – ORIA·P·R Victory standing facing on globe, head l., holding wreath in r. hand and palm branch in l. In field, S – C. C 331. BMC 269. RIC 520 var. (different reverse legend break). H. Sutherland “Supplementum Galbianum” in QT 1984 –, cf. R. Mowat “Le monnayage de Clodius Macer et les deniers de Galba marqués des lettres SC”, 1902, p. 194, 331. CBN –, cf. 270 (different reverse legend break).
An apparently unrecorded variety of a very rare type. Struck on fresh metal
and with a lovely iridescent tone. Extremely fine / good extremely fine
