Roman Empire. Octavian, 32 – 27 BC.
Denarius, Brundisium or Roma 29-27 BC, AR 3.89 g. Helmeted head of Mars r.; below, IMP. Rev. Round shield with eight-rayed star at centre, set on sword and spear in saltire. C 44 var. (shield inscribed CAESAR). BMC 644 var. (shield inscribed CAESAR). RIC 274 var. (shield inscribed CAESAR).
Sear Imperators 428 var. (shield inscribed CAESAR). CBN 87 var. (shield inscribed CAESAR).
An apparently unrecorded variety without CAESAR inscribed on the shield.
Old cabinet tone and very fine
