Description

Decimal Coinage, a trial, essay or error 1 peso, Culiacán mint, 1897 M, type as the gold peso but struck in silver, 1.29g, extremely fine and toned, interesting. Possibly associated with the 1898 introduction of the silver cap and rays peso at Culiacán, where the striking of gold pesos was a regular, if low-volume, practice. More prosaically, the coin may have been struck either in error or as a ‘sport’ on a silver flan which would have been marginally too light for the 5 centavos.

Estimate: GBP 100 - 150
