Description

Bavaria, Karl Theodor of Pfalz (1777-1799), ducat, 1778, Munich, bust left with hair tied, rev., crowned oval arms garnished with laurel and palm sprays, 3.49g (F. 255), virtually as struck, lightly toned. Karl Theodor was the son of Count Palatine Johann Christian von Pfalz-Sulzbach and his wife Maria Anna de la Tour. Following the death of Karl Philipp, the last Elector from the Neuburg line, he became Elector of the Palatinate in 1742. In 1777 he also inherited the Electorate of Bavaria, moving his residence from Mannheim to Munich. He died on 16 February 1799, without leaving any legitimate direct heir.
