Description

Ptolemaic Empire, Ptolemy IV (222-204 BC), stater (tetradrachm), Alexandria, c. 211/10 BC, diademed and veiled head of Berenike II right, rev., ΒΕΡΕΝΙΚΗΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ, cornucopia bound with royal diadem, 13.65g, die axis 12.00 (CPE 897; Svoronos 1115, pl. 35, 19; SNG Berry 1487), edge corrosion at 8 o’clock on reverse, some porosity, about extremely fine and very rare. Provenance: G. Philipsen collection, Hirsch XXXII, 14 November 1912, lot 596 and Virgil M. Brand collection (part 3), Sotheby’s Zurich, 9 June 1983, lot 185.
