Description

James I, Third Coinage, shilling, m.m. thistle, a carefully-struck piece of Fine Work, sixth bust right, rev, square-topped shield, 5.86g (N. 2124; S. 2668), prooflike, virtually as struck and of excellent quality, with dark graphite toning, extremely rare thus Provenance: Stated to have been acquired in a group of coins from the 18th Century collection of Dr Andrew Gifford. Traces of red wax deposit can be observed on the coin's surface, suggesting that it has been photographed and plated in the past.
