Afghanistan, 1878-80, 3 clasps, Charasia, Kabul, Kandahar (B/2151. Pte. J. Power. 92nd Highrs.), light surface marks, very fine Private John Power, of Tramore, Waterford, Ireland, joined the 16th Foot on 6 February 1864 at Belfast at the age of 18, having prior experience with the Tipperary Artillery Militia. After a somewhat chequered military career – being confined for drunkenness on various occasions - he served in Canada for over 5 years, in Burma for over 3 years, and in the East Indies for 3 years. He later transferred to the 69th Foot in October 1872, and while in Afghanistan appears to have transferred again to the 92nd Highlanders on 31 March 1880. He remained with the 92nd Highlanders seeing service in South Africa in 1881, until his discharge in February 1885 after almost 21 years with the colours.
