An Interesting Great War Pair awarded to Private Albert Hesketh Daubeny, Leinster Regiment. Having failed to pass the medical examination for the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, owing to supposed ‘heart weakness’, he nonetheless began an important career as a press artist and illustrator later successfully enlisted for service in the Great War as a private soldier in 1915, comprising: British War and Victory Medals, 1914-1919 (5544 Pte. A. H. Daubeny. Leins. R.); Pair swing-mounted as worn, toned, extremely fine (2) Private Albert Hesketh Daubeny was born at Ryde, Isle of Wight, on 4 January 1877. Educated at Clifton College, Bristol, he was denied entry to Sandhurst owing to ‘heart weakness’ but embarked on a career in ‘Black and White’ at the Press Art School, London. Supplying regular sketches and images for Punch, The Sketch and Tatler, during the Great War he was nonetheless accepted for service with the 7th and 2nd Battalions, Leinster Regiment (and, sources suggest, the Royal Sussex Regiment).
