The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Military Division, G.C.B., Knight Grand Cross breast star, circa 1820, attributed to General Sir Henry Johnson Bart. (1748-1835), in silver, with gold and enamelled centre and gilt reverse and gold retaining pin, the centre with engraved arms of the Johnson Baronetcy, 100mm, good very fine General Sir henry Johnson was born in 1748, appointed ensign in the 28th Foot in February 1761, and served in the latter actions of the Seven Years War. He embarked for America in 1775, on his arrival General Sir William Howe appointed him to the command of a light infantry battalion which he commanded during several actions during the War of Independence until severely wounded In October 1777. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 17th Foot, but was taken prisoner at Yorktown while commanding the 17th Foot under Cornwallis, returning to England following the surrender.In June 1798 he was appointed to the colonelcy of the 81st Foot and later that year he served on the Staff of Ireland. On being ordered to the coast of Wexford he was in command at the battle of New Ross and had two horses shot under him. The victory was generally considered to be instrumental in the suppression of the rebellion. In June 1799 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and full general in April 1808. He was created a Baronet of Great Britain (London Gazette: 3 October 1818) and died 18 March 1835.
