Description

Netherlands, Philip II of Spain and the Duke of Alba as Governor-General of Belgium, 1567, large oval bronze restitution medal, bust of Philip II right wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, rev., bust named to Ferdinand de Toledo, Duke of Alba left; dated 1567 below; both truncations with incised JC monogram, 98 x 86mm (Armand II, 304, C; BDM III, p. 65), cast in high relief, about extremely fine with brown patina, rare Forrer in BDM states that the JC monogamist is French, a producer of cast medals of earlier celebrities in the 17th century. His portrait of the Duke of Alba on the present medal is in fact copied from a medal of a certain Plancheus, otherwise unknown. A silver-gilt example from the Gaines collection was sold here, 8 December 2005, lot 50.
