Description

Italy, Milan, Pier Paolo Tomei called Romano (c. 1525-after 1567), Gonzalo II Fernandez de Cordoba (1520-78), Duke of Sessa and Governor of the Duchy of Milan, bronze medal, armoured bust left; signed PPR behind, rev., COELUM TE FLANTE SERENUM, a putto blowing away clouds, 40mm, pierced four times possibly for use as a hat badge, fine contemporary cast, apparently unpublished Ex Baldwin's, 5 May 2012, lot 2033. Previously thought to be by the Florentine medallist Pietro Paolo Galeotti called Romano, the cast medals signed P P R have now been re-attributed to the Milanese sculptor Pietro Paolo Tomei, also called Romano, in an article by Silvio Leydi and Susanna Zanuso, Pietro Paolo Tomei detto Romano: la ritrovata identità del medaglista PPR, in Bolletino d'Arte 25, 2015,
