Charles I, The Earl of Loudon, 1645, cast silver portrait medal by Abraham Simon, signed A.S. on truncation, obv., capped bust of John Campbell, Earl of Loudon left, wearing collar and doublet, rev., IOHAN COMM: LOVDVN SVMMVS SCOTIAE CANCELLARIVS, ∙1645∙ below, 36 mm (M.I. I/321/157; Cochran-Patrick 97/5; Platt vol. II, p. 63; Eimer 148), toned, good very fine and very rare, with old collector’s ticket John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudon (1598-1663) was a member of the General Assembly of 1638 which opposed the imposition of the new prayer book by Charles I and Archbishop Laud. He became the most active of the Covenanter’s leaders and in 1639 he was briefly condemned to death by Charles I before being pardoned. In 1641 he became Lord Chancellor of Scotland and was one of the Commissioners for Scotland at the Treaty of Uxbridge in 1645, a significant but ultimately abortive attempt to end the First Civil War..
