Charles I, Newark Besieged, shilling 1646, struck on a flan cut from a piece of silver plate bearing the royal arms, visible as an undertype on reverse, otherwise similar to the last, 5.96g (Hird 258, this piece; Jessop Group II, this piece illustrated as fig. 2(c); Brooker 1225, same dies; N. 2640; S. 3143), flan a little irregular, good very fine and toned Jessop notes a surviving James I silver-gilt dish dated 1620 discovered in 1928 and bearing very similar royal arms, supporting Dr Phillip Nelson’s 1905 suggestion that a royal service might have been sacrificed to provide coinage in 1646.
