Charles I, Carlisle Besieged, 3 shillings, 1645, obv., large crown above C : R with rosettes at sides, value .III.s below, rev., .OBS: / .:CARL: / 1645., rosettes above and below, 15.2g/234.6gr (Nelson 1; cf. Brooker 1219 (same obverse die but from a different reverse die); N. 2633; S. 3137), a little weakly struck in parts, generally very fine Provenance: M.W. Peace, Sotheby, 19 November 1888, lot 241; T. Bliss, Sotheby, 22 March 1916, lot 460; Virgil Brand (Inventory no. 80103); Whitelaw (private purchase), 1960.
