Description

Mexico, Carlos IV, Proclamation in Mexico City, 1789, silver medal, Minería issue by [G.A.] Gil, King’s bust right wearing Orders of the Golden Fleece and of Carlos III, legend CAROLO IV HISP ET IND REGI FELICITER INAUGURATO, rev., crowned shield with Order collars over pillars of Hercules, 44mm (Grove C-33a), with an old ‘V’-shaped file mark on obverse rim at 9 o’clock and a metal fault on edge at 6 o’clock, otherwise mint state, deeply toned Struck from the same pair of dies as the last. The obverse is also slightly convex in form and the medal shows developing die flaws as well as a more pronounce metal irregularity at the bottom edge. It is suggested that the edge might have been adjusted, and the file-mark perhaps applied, at the time of striking with the objective of reducing stress on the failing dies.
