George III, Fete at Vauxhall Gardens, 1813, pair of copper-gilt clichés, by Halliday, obv., bare head of Wellington left, ARTHVRVS MARCHIO DE WELLINGTON around, date MDCCCXII below rev., FETE OF VITTORIA JULY 20 1813 within laurel wreath, 49.5mm (B.H.M. 758; Eimer, Medallic Portraits of the Duke of Wellington, 28b), obverse stained in a couple of places, otherwise extremely fine; offered with the two-piece gilt circular frame in which the clichés were originally mounted, with integral loop for suspension and one of the two original glass lunettes forming the complete medal, lacking one lunette but otherwise complete, rare Ex Lord FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan Collection, Christie’s, 22 May 2014, lot 61 (part).Eimer records that these medals were presented by Edward Thomason for distribution to selected guests at the grand dinner held in Vauxhall Gardens in celebration of victory at the Battle of Vittoria. Recipients included the Duke of Wellington’s elder brother William Wellesley-Pole, soon to become Master of the Mint who, with his wife, thanked Thomason for the medals ’which were worn last night at the National Fete, and were much approved’.
