Emin Relief Expedition Star, 1887-89, in silver, bearing hallmarks for Birmingham, dated 1889, maker’s mark ‘BHJ’, unnamed as issued, with original suspension loop, toned, extremely fine and scarce This silver star, given by the Royal Geographical Society, was awarded to local personnel who took part in the expedition commanded by Henry Morton Stanley to rescue Emin Pasha, the Governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria on the Upper Nile. Approximately 175 of these awards were distributed to the native bearers in Africa. Offered with contemporary printed collector’s ticket.
