Sergt. J. Birch. D/A Bde R.H.A.); Army Lond Service and Good Conduct, V.R. small reverse lettering (1373. By. S. Maj: J. Birch. R.H.A.); Army Meritorious Service, G.V.R. (S. Mjr. J. Birch. R.A.); Group swing-mounted on bar with reverse pin for wear, light hairlines from polishing, otherwise extremely fine and lustrous (3) Sergeant-Major James Birch is confirmed on the Afghanistan 1878-80 Medal Roll (medal without clasp) and is named in ‘The Annuity Meritorious Service Medal 1847-1953’ by McInnes showing full entitlement as above. His Army Meritorious Service Medal was issue in 1927.
