Afghanistan, 1878-1880, no clasp (Lieut: H. G. Weir. R.H.A.), lightly toned, extremely fine with some lustre Brigadier-General Harry George Weir (1853-1929) was born on 30 March 1853, and enlisted as a Gentleman Cadet on 7 February 1871. Commissioned as Lieutenant on 12 September 1872, he served in India between October 1873 and December 1877, later serving in Afghanistan with “D” Battery / “A” Brigade from February 1879 until the conclusion of the first campaign later that year.He was promoted to Captain on 21 December 1881, seeing a period of service in Cyprus & Egypt in 1882, and then again in India between March 1888 (promoted to Major on 2 September 1889) and February 1893. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 19 August 1898, and to Colonel on 19 August 1902, retiring at that rank the following year.Recalled to service in the Great War in mid-October 1914, the following year in 1915 he commanded the 6th Divisional Artillery, and was promoted to Brigadier-General in 1917.
