Description

After the Antique (Rome or Florence, mid-15th century), Apollo, Marsyas and Olympus, oval bronze plaquette, Marsyas tied to a tree, Apollo standing behind him and with Olympus kneeling at his feet, 41.4 x 33.7mm (Molinier 2ff; Bange 67; Warren, Ashmolean, 246-247), pierced, solder at to edge, a very fine contemporary cast Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 144 in red on reverse]; ex Avery collection, Morton & Eden, 11 June 2008, lot 370. In Botticelli's portrait of Simonetta Vespucci she wears a cameo of this type, the so-called Seal of Nero, around her neck. See also following lot.
