A China 1900 and Great War Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Group of 3 awarded to Able Seaman James Gallop, R.F.R., late R.N., who was presented with his China 1900 by King Edward VII on 8 March 1902, comprising: China, 1900, no clasp (J. Gallop, A.B., H.M.S. Hermione.); British War Medal, 1914-1920 (174687. J. Gallop. A.B. R.N.); Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct, G.V.R. (174697 (Dev. B. 704) J. Gallop. A.B. R.F.R.); Group loose, toned, minor edge bump to the first, otherwise good very fine (3) Able Seaman James Gallop was born on 27 July 1877 at Kensington, London and enlisted for service with the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class on 9 July 1893 with the shore-establishment H.M.S. Impregnable. In his first 5 years in the Royal Navy he served in no fewer than 7 different ships or shore-establishments, joining H.M.S. Hermione at the rank of Ordinary Seaman on 7 April 1898, and being promoted to Able Seaman on 1 January 1900. During his time aboard this vessel he served during the Boxer Rebellion in China, for which he received the China 1900 Medal without clasp (roll confirms). This medal was awarded to Able Seaman Gallop in person by H.M. the King Edward VII on 8 March 1902, after which he retired from naval service a few months later. On 25 April 1904 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport, seeing service between 2 August 1914 and 21 February 1919 during the Great War (principally aboard the ships Amphitrite, Diligence and Blake). 1914-15 Star and Victory medals are absent.
