Egypt & Sudan, 1882-89, dated reverse, single clasp, Alexandria 11th July (W. Dicks. Pte R.M: H.M.S. “Alexandra”), surface marks from previous wear with star, otherwise good very fine Private W. Dicks was born on 13 June 1848 at Frome, Somerset, and enlisted into the Royal Marines on 13 September 1866 at Salisbury. He served during the Egypt & Sudan campaign aboard H.M.S. Alexandra which took part in the bombardment of the forts at Alexandria and received damage from enemy batteries. During this bombardment, Chief Gunner Israel Harding, also of the Alexandra, won the V.C. by picking up a live shell and throwing it into a tub of water, rendering it safe and saving many lives. Private Dicks was discharged to pension on 6 October 1887.
