*Italy (late 15th or early 16th century), Satyr’s head set in a wreath and flanked by two putti who hold up ribbons, bronze plaquette cast as the lid of a casket, the scene within a border of palmettes, the satyr’s head separately cast and set into the centre of the plaquette (to replace the Medusa head which is found on most other examples), 106 x 201mm (cf. Kress 491; Warren, Ashmolean, 16 and Wallace collection, 24 for entire caskets and Warren’s note on a version with a satyr’s head, as here, replacing the Medusa head which was formerly in the Bischoffsheim collection), dark patina and a very fine contemporary cast
