Description

*Military Medal, G.V.IR. (2984558 Sjt. R. Greer. A & S.H.), a few surface marks and edge nicks, otherwise very fine. M.M.: London Gazette: 19 October 1944 ‘in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe’ (Glasgow) (since died of wounds). Robert Raphael Gray Greer, son of Annie Greer of Glasgow, husband of Margaret Campbell Greer, of Glasgow, served with the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in WW2. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in North West Europe, but was wounded in action and died of wounds soon after on 30 June 1944. His original recommendation reads as follows: ‘On 29th June 44 the Bn was holding a bridgehead over the R. Odon North of Gavrus when the enemy attacked the forward positions with infantry and tanks supported by artillery and mortars. Sgt Greer was in command of a platoon of B Company which was the forward company. The country was difficult and enclosed and ideal for snipers. It was difficult to keep touch with the situation as it developed but Sgt Greer had complete command. He was always to be seen in the thick of the fighting encouraging his men & directing events to meet and repulse the enemy wherever they appeared. Throughout, by his personal example, he showed devotion to duty of the highest order. By his own initiative and leadership and the accuracy with which his platoon brought fire to bear on the enemy he contributed largely to the success of his company. Sgt Greer was severely wounded just as the enemy was forced to abandon his attempts to take the bridge.’
