*Indian Order of Merit, Military Division, Reward of Valor, 1st type (1837-1912), 2nd Class in silver and gold, with claw type ribbon buckle, reverse engraved ‘2nd Class Order of Merit’, unnamed as issued, bearing hallmarks both sides for London dated 1858, maker’s mark ‘ISH’ for John Samuel Hunt, toned, light surface marks both sides, otherwise very fine and scarce. According to ‘British Gallantry Awards’ by Abbott and Tamplin, just 89 2nd Class awards of the Military Division were issued during the Indian Mutiny.
