Description

Ireland, Bank of Ireland, £50, no. 1362, 5 May 1827, printed in black on white watermarked Bank of Ireland paper, with elaborate and finely-detailed vignettes of Hibernia at upper left and upper right, value fifty in blocks below, manuscript signature in centre, 215 x 110mm, paper slightly crinkled but fresh and original, generally good very fine and excessively rare, possibly unique in private hands. Provenance: Previously offered by Spink & Son, 29 September 2006 auction, lot 727. Following the 2006 sale it was established that the £50 note had previously been stolen so the sale was rescinded and the note returned to its original owner. It is now offered with good title and the lot includes a solicitor’s letter giving further details. Another example, dated 1832, exists in in the archives of the Bank of Ireland.
