Description

Maratha Confederacy, Talegaon Mint, Silver Rupee, AH 11XX, In the name of Muhammad Shah, Obv: Persian legend "Sikka Mubarak Badshah Ghazi", Rev: Persian legend "sana julus" & "zarb Talegaon", 11.34g, 24.00mm, (Unlisted in major catalogs) test marks, about very fine, Exceedingly Rare.

Note: During the reign of the second Peshwa, Baji Rao I (1720-1740) various money-lending families became active around the area around Pune and evidence suggests that various mints started operating in this region during this time. Coins issued from Chinchwad and Talegaon were modeled after the rupee from Surat. While these coins remain unpublished, their respective mint names are evident on their bodies.

While Chinchwad was controlled by the Deos, Talegaon belonged in Jagir to the Dabhade family. The latter was given authority to collect tribute from Gujarat by Chhatrapati Shahu, subsequently bringing them in direct conflict with the Peshwa. TrimbakraoDabhade was defeated and killed at the Battle of Dabhoi which took place in April 1731. His successor, Yashwantrao, was ineffectual and the struggle against the Peshwa was sustained through the actions of his mother, UmabaiDabhade. Suzerainty over this region would finally come into the hands of the Peshwa with the support of the Dabhade lieutenant, Damaji Gaikwad.
