Description

Chola Empire, Kulottunga I (11 Century CE), Gold Fanam, Obv: a rooster standing facing right on a branch, a linear circle in front of it, Rev: the Nagari legend "...Cho"(?), a dagger below, 0.27g, 9.54mm, almost uncirculated, Unique.

Note: Less than 5 rooster Fanam's of the Cholas are known to be in existence making all of them exceptionally important due to their rarity.

Though born in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Chakravarthy Kulottunga Choladeva did not belong to the mainline of Chola kings but was rather a scion of Rajaraja Narendra of the Eastern Chalukyas by a Chola princess. He would participate in many campaigns alongside his Chola kin before assuming the Chalukya throne. Sensing a power vacuum, he would eventually assume the throne of the Chola emperor, thereby giving rise to the so-called Chola Chalukyas. His title "Kulottunga" means "exalter of his race".
