Note: Shams ud-din Iltutmish assumed the Mamluk (Ghulam) throne in AD 1211. He is considered to be the founder of the Delhi Sultanate as it was during his rule that the kingdom's position would be consolidated in northern India. After being endorsed by the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad. Iltimush expanded his power by bringing several neighbouring territories, including Bengal, under the authority of Delhi. Though the suzerainty of Bengal under the Mamluks was interrupted briefly by the mad king of Ali Mardan Khalji, his murder in AH 609 (AD 1212/13), and the subsequent succession of Husam ud din'Iwad as Sultan Ghiyath ud din 'Iwad saw Bengal submitting to Delhi's rule for fear of invasion. Soon afterward, however, 'Iwad reneged on his agreement with Iltutmish, who sent his son, Nasir al-Din Mahmud, to invade Bengal. Following 'Iwad's defeat and execution in 1227, Nasir ud din Mahmud was appointed as his father's viceroy in Bengal.
