Description

Roman Republic - Julius Caesar. Silver denarius (3.45 g, 17 mm). 49-48 B.C. Military mint traveling with Caesar in South Gaul or Hispania.

Elephant advancing right, trampling on serpent; CAESAR in exergue. Banker mark.

Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis (surmounted by wolf's head), and apex.

Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; RSC 49.

Good very fine condition, some porous silver areas in reverse.
