Eight Testerns Elizabeth I Portcullis Money S.2607A mintmark 0, ex Magnus Sale Spink Magnus sale Lot 903 (2012 Auction 12009), realised £42,000 in 2012, Spink gives a fascinating provenance in their description saying that a 3 coin set of Portcullis Money including this piece was purchased from Patrick Finn in 1976 for £5,500. This 8 Testern has also changed hands in the past for £60,000 on that occasion through Stanley Gibbons, so this coin has changed hands twice in the past at price levels above our low estimate. Spink described this coin in 2012 as well rounded EF and certainly one of the finest know, we totally agree it is certainly the best example we have seen. The coin is now in a NGC holder with the Magnus Collection provenance on the label and graded AU 55 by NGC (a very high grade for Elizabethan silver). The portcullis money has a powerful historical significance as it is considered to be our first truly colonial issue
