Description

Andronicus II Palaeologus, with Michael IX, 1282-1328. Basilikon (Silver, 21 mm, 2.00 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, 1304-1320. KVPIE BOHΘEI Christ, nimbate, seated facing on backless throne, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Rev. MXHΛ ΔЄCΠO ΑNΔPONIKO Andronicus II, on the left, standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia and loros and Michael IX, on the right, standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia and loros, holding between them labarum on shaft. DOC 510. SB 2402. Rare and nicely toned. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

From a collection of coins from the medieval Balkans, ex Elsen 113, 16 June 2012, 741 (with original ticket).

This variety of SB 2402, with the imperial names on the reverse, is much rarer than the variety reading AVTOKPATOPЄC PωMAωN.
