Description

Manuel Comnenus-Ducas, despot of Thessalonica, 1230-1237. Trachy (Bronze, 29 mm, 1.90 g, 7 h), Thessalonica. Bust of St. Demetrius facing, beardless and nimbate, holding spear in his right hand. Rev. Manuel standing facing on the left, wearing divitision and chlamys, holding cruciform scepter in his right hand and akakia in his left hand, crowned by Christ standing facing on the right, nimbate, holding book of Gospels in his left hand; above, IC; in field to right, XC. DOC 3a. SB 2177. Rare. Somewhat rough and with a very small hole in the flan, otherwise, very fine.
